Making Tax Digital VAT returns, done in minutes
Connect to HMRC, pick your VAT period and let Munshian Ledger fill in all nine boxes from your books. Check it, submit it, done.
Four steps from books to HMRC
Connect to HMRC
Sign in with your HMRC details once to link your VAT number. We never see your HMRC password.
Pick an open period
We show the VAT periods HMRC is expecting from you, with their deadlines.
Check the nine boxes
Every box is worked out from your invoices, bills and bank, and you can see what makes up each figure.
Submit and relax
Send the return to HMRC and keep the receipt in your records.
Everything you need to stay on the right side of HMRC
Digital records
Your invoices, bills and bank lines are your digital records, just as MTD requires. No spreadsheets, no copying.
Adjustments with a reason
Need to change a box? You can, but you must add a note saying why, so there is always a clear record.
Foreign currency handled
Invoices in euros or dollars are converted to pounds with HMRC's own monthly exchange rates.
Deadlines in view
Open obligations come straight from HMRC, so you always know what's due next.
Lock filed periods
Once a return is filed, lock the period so nobody changes the figures behind it by mistake.
Receipts kept
Every submission is stored with HMRC's confirmation, ready if you ever need to show it.
What goes on a VAT return
Munshian Ledger fills in every box for you. Here's what each one means.

| 3 | Total VAT due (box 1 plus box 2) |
| 4 | VAT you are reclaiming on purchases |
| 5 | Net VAT to pay to HMRC, or to reclaim (box 3 minus box 4) |
| 6 | Total value of sales, excluding VAT |
| 7 | Total value of purchases, excluding VAT |
| 8 | Goods supplied to EU member states (Northern Ireland) |
| 9 | Goods bought from EU member states (Northern Ireland) |
MTD for VAT questions
Do I need MTD software for VAT?
Yes. All VAT-registered businesses in the UK must keep digital records and submit VAT returns through software that works with Making Tax Digital. You can no longer file a normal VAT return through the HMRC website.
Which VAT scheme does Munshian Ledger support?
Munshian Ledger works out VAT returns under the standard VAT scheme (invoice basis).
Can I change a figure before I submit?
Yes. You can adjust the boxes that HMRC allows to be changed. You must add a short note giving the reason, which is kept with the return so you have a clear record.
What happens if I submit late?
HMRC uses a points-based system for late VAT returns. Each late return earns a point, and once you reach the threshold for your filing frequency you get a £200 penalty. Late payment of VAT can also lead to penalties and interest.
